Ghosts & Spirits ยท Scotland and Northern England

Brownie

A household spirit who helps with domestic labor when treated with tact and small offerings.

Legend File

Brownies are less interested in terror than in household reciprocity. They may work at night, tidy, thresh, or help a farm, but they dislike arrogance, improper payment, or being forced into visibility. The stories make domestic labor feel enchanted while also warning that helpful spirits have boundaries.
