Nuckelavee

A skinless Orkney sea monster blending horse and rider into one horror.

Legend File

The Nuckelavee is one of Orkney's most disturbing sea monsters, often described as a skinless fusion of horse and rider. It brings disease, blight, and terror from the sea, but fresh water can repel it in some tellings. The creature feels like a storm given anatomy: salt, sickness, and nightmare moving on hooves.
