Kraken

A colossal sea creature said to drag ships beneath the waves.

The Kraken grew from sailors' fear of the open ocean, where a moving shadow could become a living island. Descriptions vary from giant crab to monstrous octopus, but the function remains the same: it gives the sea a body. A ship that disappears is no longer lost to weather; it has been taken by something ancient below.
