Ghosts & Spirits ยท Ireland and Celtic folklore

Banshee

A spirit whose keening cry warns that death is near.

Legend File

The Banshee is feared not because she attacks, but because she announces. Her cry, heard before a death in some Irish families, turns sound into prophecy. She can appear as a young woman, a matron, or an old figure washing bloodied clothes, each form making grief feel like a visitor already at the door.
