Golem of Prague

A clay guardian animated to defend Prague's Jewish community.

Legend File

The Golem of Prague is shaped from clay and brought to life through sacred knowledge. In the best-known versions it protects the Jewish community, then becomes dangerous when power outruns control. The legend is one of the great ancestor stories of artificial life: useful, loyal, and frightening when commands become too literal.

Source Framing

Jewish folklore around the golem as animated matter; the Prague/Rabbi Judah Loew version is the best-known later legend.
