Amaterasu

The Shinto sun goddess whose hidden light plunges the world into darkness.

Legend File

Amaterasu is central to Shinto tradition as the radiant sun goddess and ancestral figure of Japan's imperial line. In one famous story she withdraws into a cave after conflict with Susanoo, and the world loses its light until the other kami lure her out with ritual, laughter, and a mirror. Her myth turns sunlight into both cosmic order and social ceremony.
