Medusa

Greece · Aegean Sea

A cursed Gorgon whose gaze could turn warriors into stone.

Medusa began as one of the most haunting figures of Greek myth: a woman transformed into a Gorgon, her hair becoming living snakes and her face becoming a weapon. Heroes feared her not because she hunted armies, but because a single direct look could end a life. Perseus defeated her by watching only her reflection, turning the monster's own terror into a tactical puzzle.

Greek Gorgon myth in the Perseus cycle: mortal sister of Stheno and Euryale, beheaded by Perseus; the Athena/Poseidon transformation is a later Ovidian strand.
