Chernobog

A dark Slavic figure known from sparse and late medieval evidence, not a secure pan-Slavic god.

Legend File

Chernobog is tempting to treat as a dramatic god of darkness, but the evidence is thin. Medieval sources mention a Black God in a West Slavic context, and later folklore, scholarship, art, and fantasy expanded the idea far beyond what the early evidence can prove. The safest version is a shadowy, contested figure rather than a complete ancient biography.

Source Framing

Sparse medieval West Slavic evidence around Chernobog or a 'Black God' figure, especially Helmold of Bosau's Chronica Slavorum; later interpretations remain uncertain and should not be treated as secure pan-Slavic mythology.

Archive reference plate of Chernobog as a contested dark figure with winter landscape, charcoal, and shadow studies.
