Achilles

The greatest Greek warrior of the Trojan War, whose rage, grief, and mortality drive the Iliad.

Legend File

Achilles is strength sharpened by a wound in the soul. His refusal to fight, his grief for Patroclus, and his return to battle make the Iliad less a simple war story than a study of honor, rage, and the price of glory. Later heel traditions make vulnerability visible, but the older tragedy already knows that no hero is invulnerable.
